This is suspicious of an inflammatory or infective etiology, i.e. laryngitis, pharyngitis or epiglottitis.\n\nLaryngitis and pharyngitis are most often due to viral infections, and typically follow an indolent course. However, this patient appears quite ill - this is at odds with these diagnoses.\n\nAcute epiglottitis may give rise to a similar clinical presentation, and these patients are often acutely ill.
