Herpes Simplex, Genital


Step 1: View clinicals

A 24 year old pregnant lady presents with fever, body aches and malaise for 4 days. She also complains of itching and soreness of the vulva, and dysuria. This is her first such episode. This is her first pregnancy and she is at 36 weeks of gestation. Her last sexual exposure was 1 week ago, with her husband. Her medical history is unremarkable and she is not on any medications.

Step 2: Order all relevant investigations

Viral cultures

The HSV-2 virus is isolated.

HSV serology

The type specific serology tests are negative for both HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Anti-Treponema EIA

The Anti-Treponema enzyme immunoassay (EIA) screening test is negative.

HIV screening

The HIV screening test is negative.

Step 3: Select appropriate management

Elective cesarean section
Intramuscular Penicillin
Oral analgesics
