Another ulcer

Step 1: View clinicals

A 31 year old man presents with a painful ulcer of the penis and a lump in the left groin for 2 weeks. He recalls having unprotected sex with a commercial sex worker around a week before the ulcer appeared. His medical, surgical and family histories are unremarkable.

Step 2: Order all relevant investigations

VDRL and HIV screen

VDRL: non reactive HIV Screening test: negative

Urine PCR for C. trachomatis

The PCR test is negative.

Culture for H. ducreyi

Cultures are positive for Haemophilus ducreyi

HSV Cultures

Cultures are negative.

Step 3: Select appropriate management

Screen for HIV in 3 months
I&D of nodes
